Dave Hyman was born in San Francisco to Sheila and Bern Hyman who were very long time residents of Pacifica, CA He grew up with two brothers, his eldest, Marc, and his youngest, Rob, and was a graduate of Terra Nova High School class of 1974.
Growing up in Pacifica, he found jobs at local restaurants, including Nicks and the Vagabond. While at Terra Nova High School, he participated in football, soccer, and swimming. After graduating in 1974 and wanting to venture out, he joined the U.S. Navy in order to travel the world.
At the age of 17, Dave enlisted in the Navy and became a SEAL, a Navy commando trained in special operations. SEAL stands for “SEa, Air, Land”. Dave was the youngest in his class, specializing as a master SCUBA diver and known for his ability to execute endless pull-ups and sit-ups. He broke the record on his installation for performing 2000 sit-ups in one hour, which was the most recorded at that time.
During Hell Week, he was rated number one in his class, remaining awake six days straight (without any coffee, mind you). He graduated first in his class for physical fitness.
Dave and his SEAL team were involved in the evacuation of Saigon, Viet Nam where he was proud to assist in getting war refugees rescued securely onto American ships.
After fulfilling his four-year obligation, Dave was honorably discharged and released from active duty and transferred to Naval Reserve. While in the reserves and on assignment Dave fell off a cliff, landed in the rushing Stanislaus River and it took the Navy and the Forest Service 9 hours to find him. He survived the ordeal by using his training.
He met his future wife, Diane, in 1979 in San Francisco. They were married on April 19, 1980 and had their one and only child, Elizabeth, on February 3, 1985.
In 1987 he opened Encore Performance Catering based in Redwood City, and was the owner operator for almost 30 years. His primary niche market was Celebration of Life Catered events.
Dave also was an active member of Rotary on the Peninsula, Chamber of Commerce and City Trees acting as its President, and received many accolades for his leadership.
Dave’s favorite saying was, “It’s you the people, not money that matter the most.”
