BMW return to roots?

One of the reasons the new GS is exciting is that it seems BMW is
returning to its roots.
What initially attracted me, back in the 80's, was the form
follows function approach.
This is plainly evident in the first few paragraphs of this ad.

To me this embodied the spirit of BMW touring.
It seems they may be returning to roots with the new GS.
