        Call me a conformist, but BMW suggests cable replacement
on a regular schedule (24K?) I waited a bit longer than that, and
the cable indeed started to fray. At the time I only had a car,
so I doubt it was and corrosion issue.

Replacing the cables doesn't really improve things unless your
cables are so
bad that they're starting to shred, which is not unbelievable on
a 9 year
old bike.
