The left (clutch) hand grip warmer on my 03 R1150R stopped working in the middle of a cold ride - took it to the dealer (Victory BMW Chandler, AZ)and they replaced the left grip and it solved the problem - right grip has never had a problem - so I guess the answer is, at least on a similar bike, you an just replace the one grip.
