While I liked the other answers better, there is a chance that John
really wants to know what it is...  It's the bit of electronics that
makes sure you are using the correct key and the reason replacement
keys cost $80 or more.  If the electronics on the bike can't talk to
the electronics on the key the electronic immobiliser won't let the
bike start.
