Thanks all for the helpful links!

I guess I won't know what my noise is until after I replace some  
chain tensioner parts and take _that_ noise out of consideration. My  
noise definitely resembles the description of the chain tensioner  
noise on startup, but unfortunately I also hear it when the bike is  
running (including in gear, so I don't think it's the gearbox noise).
