One of the contributing factors to when to replace your helmet is
exposure to ozone and other atmospheric elements. Ozone in particular
contributes to the degeneration of the EPS liner. The 5 year 'standard'
applies to a new helmet. Not one that's still NIB, but has been on a
shelf in a warehouse or a showroom.
