Chains on my triumph thunderbird last about 15 to 20k.  These are the
lastest technology, rubber oringed "sealed" chains of highest quality.
Chain maintenance is a pain and they will wear out at regular intervals.
They're especially annoying on a long transcontinental trip.  They do have
their advantanges though I like a belt drive better than either a chain or a
shaft drive.
