Peter,  If your cables are bent (or kinked) or worn out, then you 
should replace.  But at your mileage, I doubt excessive wear is a 
problem.  Your poor mileage is likely a combination of pulling the cat 
code plug and having the tps adjusted wrong.  The book value is not 
where you want to be with the code plug out.  You need a lower voltage 
at idle.  Take a plug reading to see if you are running rich.  If  yes, 
lower the tps voltage a bit and check again in a couple hundred miles.  
Repeat until the mixture looks right.

Another way to check this over the long term is that there should be no 
soot at the tail pipe exit.  I can almost white glove mine.  You get 
only a very light black on your finger.   Most oil heads have a lot of 
carbon on the pipe from running rich.  Thus poor mileage.  Of course, 
valve adjustment must be correct also.
