    My gearbox was jumping out of third and fourth gear under load on about 
every fifteenth shift. BMW replaced the gearboxes each time. Mine is a 
six-speed.

    I have rebuilt a lot of oilhead five-speed gearboxes. The thrid-fourth 
gear shift fork can bend easily, and the dogs on the gears get rounded. You are 
seeing metal off the shift fork, which is a classic failure symptom.
