You've probably not seated the rings fully. If you've got 1000 miles on it,
it's time to explore that upper RPM range. I've read of numerous oilheads
over the years that had as many as 10,000 miles and still had high oil
consumption. Running the piss out of them invariably corrects the problem.

I have just bought my first oilhead -- 2004 R1150RT. I
traded up from a /5 and /6.
My question is:
Since my 600 mile service and oil change, I've added a
little more than 1.5 quarts of oil. This seems
excessive to me. Is it normal?
