If everything is in working order.....this is how I think it works:
The R1100's won't start/run with the sidestand down regardless of gear 
selection.
The R1150's will start/run with the sidestand down if the transmission is in 
neutral or the clutch is disengaged.  Just like a 1993 KLR650!
