Paul,
The ELAST belt does get re tensioned once at 6,000 miles and replaced at
36,000

Per what bulletin number and date? The bulletin that I see says NO
retensioning.

I refer to bulletin number 12 001 04 (003) Dated March 2004

The exact wording is:

IMPORTANT: The ELAST belts are maintenance free, which means it is no
longer
necessary to re-tension the belt on engines fitted with the new ELAST
belt and Freewheel pulley.

Important Note: The new ELAST belt never needs adjusting (after itbs
initial
adjustment), however it must be changed every 36,000 miles.

The Poly-V belt still needs to be re-tensioned at the 6000 mile
service and replaced every 36,000 miles.

MY WORDS: The Poly V-Belt is NOT the ELAST belt. The Poly V-belt is the name
that BMW gives to the earlier belt.

I hope the formatting stays together when I delete the HTML...
