<<Coincidentally, the famous Autolites that are said to cure surging
also have a projected tip. The first person who discovered this probably
had a Ford vehicle and a spare set of plugs, and just decided to try
them on a surging Oilhead.>>
The first documented use of the 3923 Autolites in an oilhead was by the
late Rob Lentini (the creator of the zero=zero tuning procedure). In
addition to being technically savvy, he was a cheapskate. He was simply
looking for a cheaper alternative to the $10 Bosch plugs and found them
in a spark plug cross reference catalog. It was simply a case of
serendipity that they also reduced surging in most bikes that suffer
from that affliction.
