Thanks. I have many bikes and for the winter I spray them all with WD-40, 
surfaces chromed and painted. By hosing them off in the summer (no spring in 
Montreal) they are sparkling. But those paints are old paints. I wonder if a 
recent paint job would also stand up for such a treatment.

Try a soft cotton rag soaked with WD-40. Check on a not-so-obvious
place first.
