Timing gear replacement
timing gears, good left, bad right
Angle and size match
As noted earlier, my timing gear looked pitted and otherwise in terrible condition. I pulled it off the bike earlier this week and took it and the cam gear into Joe’s. He agreed that the timing gear shouldn’t go back on the bike. The cam gear, on the other hand, is serviceable.
We went through his stash of timing gears, looking for one of the same vintage (same gear angle — it changed at some point) that fit the cam gear with the same rough measurement. We held the original two gears together and measured from the inside of one gear to to the inside of the other. Then we measured the various candidate timing gears looking for the same measurement. Two of the half of a dozen gears we tried matched angle and measurement. I grabbed one of them.
The final test will be to check for backlash or binding once both gears are back on the bike. It should at least be close.

Brent was in town for Joe’s 94th birthday party and brought the new and refurbished top end parts for my R69S. I think I have everything needed to put the bike back together. Today I took pictures of what I received. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.
