Thanks for your comments.  I can see your argument for lubing.  I was
wondering, however, if it is more applicable to the pre-plated splines (not
sure of the date).   I don't have any plans to lube but I am keeping my eyes
on an idea that a member of bmwrt has to access the splines via the starter
motor aperture and then use some special tool he has in mind to apply the
lube.

If you find the pictures of the damage please post us - TIA.
