You are right, you can. Silly me. Just be sure to pack  your walking shoes. 
When the belt frags, it takes out the HES ignition trigger  pickups under the 
lower pulley, when the shredded belt fibers pack in under  there and get 
cranked around. There are a LOT of guys who can tell you what that  failure feels 
like. The bike stops running, and you become a  pedestrian.
