For heaven's sake, don't screw the plugs in without the washer! Autolite
plugs are a bit longer than the standard Bosch/NGK plugs, so the ground
electrode is going to be a little closer to the piston with the washer in.
If you don't put the washer in, you may hit the piston with the plug.
Regardless, you may not be able to seal the cylinder without the washer.
You always use this washer with spark plugs. It's sort of a crush washer
and it gives you a little more leeway in tightening torque as well as
helping to seal the plug and give the right distance into the cylinder.
