Battery Change Info

John:

To remove and install a battery on an 1150 RT, you

remove only the left side fairing.

You may have to remove the plastic air intake pipe. That's done by popping
the lid on the air box (two clips), opening the lid all the way and sliding
the end out.

The front end of the intake pipe pulls straight up out of the rubber grommet.
You don't need to unscrew anything up there.

Now you'll have a clear view of a rubber strap on the left side of the
battery. You remove that by pulling down on the tab of rubber at the bottom
where it hooks on the battery shelf.

You can now remove the ground terminal of the battery, which is on the left.

Now slide the battery to the left until the positive terminal screw is in a
good spot.

Remove the positive terminal and slide the battery out while you pull all the
wires away from where they'd get caught.

There are a couple wires that go on each terminal. It's not difficult to keep
track of them on reinstall.

It's not too bad a job. Figure on 45 minutes if it's been a while since
you've worked on the bike. The fairing reinstall is probably the most time
consuming part.

Here's a hint on that. The rider's manual shows an order to the installation
of the screws, basically, start at the front by the oil cooler and get that
one first, followed by the two under the mirrors, then do the tank, from front
to rear, the rest are pretty easy. Get them all in and started before you
tighten any up.

Have fun!
