Another common symptom is air-leaks in the exhaust/muffler system.  My 8yr
old R1100s (now with 100,500kms !) has a broken weld on the (inlet) pipe
under the seat where it connects to the two mufflers as well as
corroded/worn/??? baffles in the first chamber.  The bike regularly
pops/backfires on over-run.  One benefit (?) is that the bike now sounds
like it's got a Staintune exhaust system fitted.
