Hi John,
I rode a '96 RS for about 30,000 miles. It was a terrific bike but mine
did have a few issues (transmission for one). I sold it last summer
with quite a few extras (3 hard cases, bar backs, Ohlins, custom seat)
for $5800. The bike had 44,000 miles on it but was nearly pristine and
ran perfectly. I now have a 2000 RT which I much prefer for the seating
position and weather protection. But damn, that red RS was a looker.
There are two sites I would check out for more info:
http://www.bikersoracle.com/rs/forum/?action=reply&forum=1&topic=1565
and
http://www.bmwsporttouring.com/
Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Subject: R 1100 RSL 1996
Hello,
By way of introduction my name is John Cawthorne, I am located in the
Phila.
PA suburbs, and have been a MC rider since 1966. I have had a quite
varied
selection of bikes over the years. The BMW's included a 1968 R60 US
(bought
new), a 1967 R60/2 with a Hollandia sidecar (still have), and a 1974?
R75/5. I
was out of riding through the late 80's and 90's and am currently riding
a
brand H pseudo sport bike.
To the point of this post I was recently talking to the friend that
bought my
/5 about buying it back (probably will) and he mentioned that he would
be
interested in selling me his 1996 R 1100 RSL. The bike is in excellent
shape
and he touts its handling and comfort. Another friend suggested that
this list
might be a source of information on this bike and I would welcome any
information on pluses or minuses of this model. Is it generally regarded
as a
reliable ride? Any service or parts availability issues? Any
idiosyncrasies? I
would also welcome any knowledgeable input on what a fair value for a
friend
to friend sale should be. Offline if you don't want to post would be
fine.
(Hate starting those wars!)
Regards,
John
