I think the current wisdom is to also use a synthetic gear oil vs the old
BMW spec. 

I have a 97 RT with about the same mileage. I like my bike, but this issue
and the engine prevent me from loving it. As flamebait, I think it is
somewhat of a flawed powertrain design. One shouldn't need to try this hard
to love a $15k bike.
