Editors note: the pictures are not in any particular order. They arrived in different e-mail messages, some with the same file name, and the internal “date taken” was set to “0000:00:00 00:00:00” which isn’t very helpful :-)
Fred says (Feb 2002):
The bottom end of the motor was assembled Sunday. Crankcase is sealed (or so we hope!). Next is installation of timing gears and oil pump. Gearbox can go in soon as inner/outer cover are made presentable. Primary as well. Top end should be installed after motor is in frame, this makes mating the engine to frame less likely to generate gouges in the fresh p-coat.
I have fitted the triple trees, without grease on the bearings…..after cleaning up that top dome nut, it is pretty scarred, may not be a good chrome candidate. Anyway, can’t final assemble the yokes until the nut is replaced or refinished.
I re-bushed the swing arm last night, and to my surprise, found the through bolt is slightly bent, which prevents proper alignment of the bearings in the bushes. If I can’t easily straighten, it will have to be replace. I’ll try working it tonight.
Will start cleaning up wheel hubs, get ready for bearing/spindle installation.
Perhaps Saturday, I’ll install the timing gears and pump, if you care to witness. Don’t know yet if Raber’s run is necessary yet. Forks and wheels are gonna be a serious driver here soon. Time to box chrome for shipment!
