Buffalo, Wyoming
We had to spend an extra night in Rapid City. We were tired after Custer Park, and motorcycle repairs.
This morning we are eager to go. First stop at the famous Sturgis, South Dakota. You can tell they are getting ready for the Harley Davidson faithful. 400,000 people expected over the several days. Hard to believe. But that is what they say. Where are they going to put that many people? is beyond me. The people arriving will figure it out.
It was fun seeing famous Sturgis. I am a BMW rider, and think little of the HD crowd, I should be more open minded. In second thought… Forget it!
[The editor asks: when did Deadwood move from SD to Wyoming?]
From Sturgis, just a few miles down the road we went to Deadwood Wyoming. Home of the famous Wild Bill Butler Hickok. Well, “home” isn’t exactly correct, more like cemetery. In a way Home Forever. Calamity Jane lies buried next to him. That was her wish, she loved him alright. He loved any and all the women, a true ladies man.
Aces and eights, dead-mans-hand. Someone shot Billy in the back. Coward! The shooter in turn was hanged! Right away.
Deadwood in my thoughts epitomizes the “Wild West”. Other town, cities may represent the old west (Abilene, Dodge, etc,) but the term WILD… that is reserved for Deadwood Wyoming.
Back on the road. 75 miles south is The Devils Tower (used in the movie Encounters of the Third Kind). If you are into Geology, you will like the place. If you are not, it was a silly visit.
Melted rock and lava is pushed up, and as it cools shrinks slipping past the surrounding rocks forming a tower going higher and higher as more melted rock and lava below keeps rising and cooling. Eventually the tower rose over a mile and a half (today 5,000 feet). This is scaled everyday by enthusiasts, holding onto hardened igneous rock.
Back on the road for the final 150 miles to Buffalo.
We have cabins for housing. Kinda dumpy, but okay. Two beds and a chair is all you can fit inside. The shower is no bigger than the sink. But it is home for today. In a way I like it.
Went to a supermarket to get food. Seems John and Laura are into yogurt, banana, blueberry and Trisquit for dinners. I had the same plus a pear. Not exactly luxury dining, but sure is healthy!
In Buffalo they were having a park musical. Perfect! We had a park musical picnic, until…
Each rain drop was the size of a cup! We barely made it back to the hotel, phew! And as we got to the motel… correct! It stopped raining. Oh, well.
I’m tired. It is 7:30 pm… I’m done!
For those in the know. The Longmire series is filmed in Buffalo. We went to the election headquarters. Did he get elected?
