Saturday–Monday, 9–11 Apr 2022

Saturday
Harry had the plan for the weekend: “to a 9 AM breakfast … and head south via numerous winding roads … to Morro Bay for camping … then to Paso Robles on Sunday”.
Chris W. and I met up with Harry at Page Mill Park-and-Ride at 7:30 AM and started our way south. On our way we picked up Rich P. on Saratoga Ave. and then stopped at Bailey/101 to pick up Mike G. Mike was on his way there so, we pulled aside on the on-ramp and waited for a few minutes. Once he arrived, we were ready to go; then I dropped my bike – lesson learned in parking on incline! Ride to Flapjack’s in Tres Pinos was uneventful, but the breakfast was good.
After the breakfast, we headed south on Rt. 25 and our first stop was at the Coalinga Rd. intersection to let the coffee out. While hanging around there, we found a geocaching box that provided some entertainment. We continued south on Rt. 25 and picked up Peach Tree and then Indian Valley roads – I have ridden those roads twice in two weeks; what fun roads! Our next major stop was in St. Miguel for gas, where we witnessed a late 60’s BSA Rocket 3 that started (apparently) without any trouble. Once replenished and a short hop on Hwy. 101 we visited Whalebone Vineyard; a nice place where we had (thanks to Harry) some cheese, crackers and chili-tequila jelly.
By then it was late afternoon and time to head to the campsite at Morro Bay State Park. Before reaching the park Rich peeled off to go to his motel, and we went to the state park. We had reservation for a campsite that could easily accommodate 4+ tents, but not the 4 motorcycles we had. I will spare the frustrating details of dealing with the park ranger (I am sure it will be discussed during the next few breakfasts), but thanks to Ben M.’s extra campsite reservation we were able to accommodate four of us in the two campsites.
After settling in at the campsite, we met up with Rich for nice dinner at DiStasio’s. After dinner, at the campsite we had a campfire and called it a night.
Sunday
After some coffee and breaking camp, we met up with Rich and headed out to Fat Cats Cafe in Avila Beach for breakfast riding Prefumo Canyon Rd. – this is a great road! The wait at the restaurant was long but worth it; the food was great and we got to see a Vincent and Velocette.
After breakfast we headed north on Hwy. 101 and exited to ride to Pozo Saloon. I wish this place was open for business, because it is such a ‘nice’ place in the middle of nowhere (I read on their website that they may open sometime this year.) Vintage Cowboy Winery next to it was open, but no one felt up for it; so, it was time to move on. We took back-roads to our next stop at Estrella Warbird Museum. I had heard about it for years, and this was my first visit to the place. The amount of time we had left in the day didn’t allow us to explore its rich collection. Some of us spent a good amount of time in Woodland Auto Display checking out the old cars. By the time we came out, we realized that it was almost closing time.
Next stop was Melody Ranch Motel where we met up with the rest of the SMBC folks. After the happy-hour and exchanging stories of travels, we went to Pappy McGregor’s for dinner; the burger I had was pretty good!
Monday
The breakfast was at Joe’s. After considering some alternatives (and possibility of rain along the way), Rob, Mike and I headed for home via Rt. 1. Rob has done a great job describing what happened during that ride, so I am going to repeat that here. We all made it home safe.
