According to BMW USA website, the R1100S has a compression ratio of
11.3:1.   

The R1150R (and R1100R) sports a 10.3:1 ratio.  It should do fine with
a lower octane than the S.  

I normally run 89 in my R1100R.  I've never had any ping, ever.   When
gas hit >$2.00/gal, I switched to 87.  It never pinged on that either.
