The BMW user guide says that 1 liter (~1 quart) per 1000 km (~600 miles) is
"normal". List wisdom indicates that this is typically a worst-case scenario
for new bikes. Your bike should not be consuming any significant amounts of
oil, but as you say, you're picking up a strange bike, so it's prudent to
have a quart handy, just in case.
