If I understand him correctly, I think Rod is on the right track and  
the factory approach isn't. After trying to verify the final torque  
used by his shop at 600 miles (an admirable research try but prolly no  
way to definitively know what the torque was that they used), he simply  
set the torque to 33 ft-lbs, as per historic practice.

While under controlled conditions, brand new parts, and known amounts  
of oil on the threads (none, I suppose), The Factory is right to use  
the plus degrees approach. But I found that there is so much  
variability in setting the initial low torque that it is really risky  
to blindly go a fixed number of degrees more. Oiled threads and a  
torque wrench used the old way prolly produce better/safer results, as  
Rod suggests. (However, Tom Cutter does not agree with this approach.)
