Well, it started simple enough. Richard Mogford, Randy Hendricks and Chris Weld decided to ride China Grade for coffee in Boulder Creek (Santa Cruz Mountains), after breakfast. Usual riders, Scottie Sharp and Dick Zunkel, both coming out of greater San Jose, let a few drops of moisture dampen their enthusiasm and DROVE to breakfast. However, riders had a good ride, good coffee, but in the process someone ran-out of camera battery, we need not mention names here. Once coffee consumed, it was decided the coast would be somewhat warmer. Ergo it was decided that a ride a little further south, for Alba Road and up Alba, a really steep’n twisty route, would get us there (warmer). On the hill, the guy with the biggest gas tank says “uh-oh!”, and turns back for petrol. That left Chris’n Richard to find their own way. Bonny Doon? When asked, Richard has this ‘blank look’ and that decided the issue. Is there a ‘Bonny Doon’? Really, this is a good question. There is no school house, library, grocery store or other structure to identify ‘Bonny Doon’. However the road to Bonny Doon leaves Pine Flat Road and then returns to Pine Flat Road and provides a scenic ‘loop’.
There was a very brief stop in Davenport (CA Hwy#1 just N. of Santa Cruz), to call home (no cell service in Boulder Creek). Swanton? Again Richard evidences this blank look. So we leave Hwy#1 for Swanton but Swanton is like Boony Doon. There’s an old school house, but that’s it! Swanton Road leaves CA Hwy#1 and then returns to CA Hwy#1. Very scenic.
Thereafter it was beat a path up Hwy#1 for Gazos Creek, Pescadero through La Honda, past Alice’s and down to Redwood City where Richard and Chris parted company for their respective spouses. Great breakfast ride, Chris knocked-down a little over 150 miles on the day.
