Another option to help get the feel right is to pick up a cheap micrometer.
Set the micrometer to .006" and then drag your .006" feeler through the
opening.  That's the feel you are looking for.

Also, be sure to wipe off any grit/dust whatever before using your feelers.
A quick swipe between oily thumb and forefinger is usually enough.
