Cleanish
The headstock body and cover and the lathe feet are somewhat clean. There was rust on the foot for the tail stock end so it is sitting in the electrolysis bath. With who knows how many years of grime removed I can see that the foot for the tailstock had been cracked and welded some time in the past. I wonder how far the lathe fell?
was rusted solid
Not made for this lathe
Along with the lathe I got a second 3-jaw chuck that was made for a larger lathe. It was rusted solid. After electolysis, cleaning, oiling, etc. it now moves easily. I bagged it and put it aside. Not sure what I’ll do with it. It’s beat up pretty bad. At least I now know that it is a Hardinge Model 30 AHCX 5” chuck with a 2-5/14”-10 screw mount.
I don’t have a containier large enough to hold the bed or lead screw for electrolysis. I’ll need to make a trip to the hardware store. A tall and thin garbage pail might do the trick. I also haven’t touched the tail stock.

Bed rust removal
I picked up a talish trash bin that wasn’t too wide and am using it for the lathe bed electrolysis bath. After cooking one end I’ll turn it over and get the other one done. The bed is fastened to the side of the container. I don’t want it falling over because someone (me!) bumps it while trying to get into the tool box.

Rust mostly gone
Friday I flipped the bed in the electrolysis bath to do the other half. Today I removed it from the bath and cleaned it off with a scotchbrite pad before wiping it down with some WD40. Most of the paint came off with the rust. I think I’ll get some primer for rusty metal to start with.
