Fresh gear oil and seals
My “test” ride went a little long: 142 miles to breakfast and back. That should have warmed the final drive oil up plenty. Time to replace it with the contents of this little bottle I picked up from my dealer. Yeah, the bottle holds more than the specified 180 cc. I’ll squeeze it in without worrying about getting the last little drop. That will be close enough.
Remove old thread locker
Cleaned FD
I removed the mudguard and discovered I’d used a bit too much thread locker last time. The screws were partiallyt stuck to the bushing at the mount points. I cleaned off the old thread locker.
It’s a Torx
The fill plug takes a 6mm hex wrench. What does the drain plug take. I took this picture to find out. It’s a torx. What size torx? A T45 feels like a fit.
Moly colored
Not much residue
The stuff that came out looked blackish, the color of moly assembly lube. This is only the second change. I expect the next change to be less black. There was about 200cc of fluid drained. I’m guessing the dealer squirted an entire bottle of gear lube when the 600 mile service was done.
There was a very small amount of pasty residue in the bottom of the drain plug; nothing that can be felt when rubbed between fingers.
Easy fill
I installed the drain plug with a new O-ring and torqued it to 20 Nm. The fill was fast and easy. Fast because I cut enough off of the end of the spout to move more gear oil. As mentioned above I didn’t bother trying to get every last bit of oil out of the container. I probably put in about the same amount I took out. The fill plug got a new crush washer and was also torqued to 20 Nm.
Fresh thread locker
Back together
Ready to ride
I used less thread locker to install the mud guard this time, about three threads worth. That’s it. The bike is back together and ready to ride. I still need to address the left side cam timing issue. The timing is barely off. I’m curious to see if I notice a difference once I set it correct. Soon.
