There were 11,417 R69S motorcycles built between the years 1960 and 1969. Mine was serial number 660858. According to the BMW historical archives it was produced on December 17, 1965 and delivered on Dec. 21, 1965 to the US importer, Butler & Smith. This is what it looked like on Jan 1, 2013:

My Grandson’s first ride
He’s 6 years old and his very first motorcycle ride was on the back of my R69S.

His feet barely fit the pegs R69S. Barely is good enough. Once around the neighborhood was not enough for Allistair. “I LOVED IT! I wanna go agin!” he said after the first pass. “Do it again!” after the 2nd pass. He’s still a bit too short for rides on the big GS.

Bike on stand
In February of 2000 the last bit of restoration work was completed and the bike was made ready to run. That’s why I’m smiling.
The next group of pictures more or less duplicate the pictures I took shortly after buying the bike (seen below) just after the post restoration inaugural ride. Too bad it was starting to rain with a dreary sky. The sun should have been shining!

R69S as purchased in December, 1997
The bike looked like this when I purchased it. I rode it almost a year before tearing in down for restoration.
