Conduit Corner
New run
I cleaned out conduit corner before the electricians started at 8 this morning. This is where I keep wood scraps, rebar scraps, handles from broken brooms, etc. With that stuff out of the way the electricians ran conduit from the main panel through the wall to the exterior of the house.
Once the electricians left I put back the piece of wall board I’d removed. I had to cut it in two and notch it for the new pipe. It doesn’t look very pretty but after putting back the wood scraps, rebar scraps, etc., nobody sees it.
Disconnect on wall
Power and Control connects here
The conduit goes to a disconnect on the wall. Flexible conduit brings it to the heat pump. I took a picture of where power and control lines connect before the electricians made any connections. A 50 Amp breaker was added to the main panel to supply the heat pump.
Drain connection
Pressure test soon?
The copper lines and the drain line for the downstairs unit were connected. The installer does not like the drain line coupling and will probably be changing it. I noticed a tank connected to that run. Perhaps a pressure test soon?
Downstairs head unit wiring
Power and Control wiring
I got a picture of in progress wiring for the downstairs head unit. Two of the lines are for power, one for control. I think. And a ground, of course. Both control cables were wired at the heat pump. Tomorrow the up stairs head unit should be wired up and connected. Progress.

Ready to wire upstairs unit
Heat pump running
Cool air
The job is not finished, but we have functional air conditioning (and extra heating) in the house. The past two days saw all cooling lines connected and pressure tested. Today the upstairs head unit power and control wiring was hooked up. Finally a vacuum was pulled on the feed lines and the valves opened to let the refrigerant flow from the heat pump to the head units.
Soon after we turned on both units and felt the cool air. Timing was perfect. The record setting September heat dome over California is mostly gone. So it goes.
Still to do are:
- maybe add more refrigerant if needed due to length of lines from heat-pump to head units.
- anchor the outdoor unit to the pad
- seal the holes in the wall
- run a drain line from the upstairs unit to the nearest roof downspout.
- put the UV protectant on the insulated lines running across the roof
- etc.
