More thread chasing
Oops!
Fix threads
I have some time to work on the bike this afternoon. I want to finish up some prep work, starting with chasing the rest of the threads on the engine case. One of the studs for the front bearing retainer was a bit messed up and in trying to back off the die the stud unscrewed from the case. I double nutted the case side of the threads and chased the bearing retainer side off case then put the stud back with some loctite.
Another thread to chase
All good
All of the threaded holes were good save two. One was easy to chase, but I couldn’t get the tap started correctly on the second. Since I had access to the other side of the hole I ran a spare M6x1.0 from inside the case to reform the starting threads.
Timing gear clean-up
A fine cut file followed by some wet/dry sandpaper were used to dress the timing gear. I didn’t notice any obvious bad spots, save a slight burr or two on the rear face of the gear. It’s not there any more.
Install front bearing
Heat carrier
I moved the bearing to the freezer and replaced the wave washers on the bearing retainer mounting screws then got out the Mapp gas to heat the bearing holder, top and bottom. It took a while before thermometer said the holder was about 200 F.
Seat bearing
Bearing retainer
Cooling
The cool bearing (wasn’t in the freezer all that long) seemed to drop all the way into the holder until I looked closely. A slight tap was needed to get the bearing to bottom all the way around. I installed the retainer while the carrier was still hot without burning any fingers. I’m getting better.
When the bearing/holder assembly had cooled down enough to hold I squirted oil around the bearing and into the oil pump feed hole until it started coming out of the timing gear oil feed pipe. Works fine. I wrapped up assembly in plastic and put it and tools away for the day. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get the crank ready to install.
