Ready to pull front bearing
Puller attached
I thougth about the slinger issue, plus got some comments from folks on the /2 mailing list. Got to make it right. So the crank will come out of the case, again. These pics show the retaining screws and nuts removed and the puller partially attached.
front slinger exposed
I’m blind
Apparently I’m not only an idiot, I’m a blind idiot. The camera flash helps show that the slinger is not all the way into the crank pin indent. I grabbed a flashlight, something I didn’t do when installing the front slinger, and took a close look. Stupid.
Front slinger removed
I removed the front slinger and heated the rear of the case until the rear bearing got loose enough to pull the crank. At least it was a bit cooler in the garage, today. Or maybe it’s just because I’m working earlier in the day than yesterday.
Really blind
Almost there
Apparently I’m really, really, blind. Looking at the rear slinger from the edge shows quite clearly that it is not fully into the indent at the crank pin. That’s the bad news. The good news is that I got the slinger flush with the face of the rear web without removing the bearing. All it took was some medium taps using a hardwood drift.
These pics show the starting point and after a few taps with the hammer. The picture of the end result is a blurry mess. I’ll take another before the crank goes back into the case.
More, later
The crank is back in the poolhouse refrigerator, cooling down. I’m going to play with notching a piece of hardwood to make a tool that will fit inside the slinger to make sure the front is fully seated when I put the crank back in the case. Maybe tomorrow.
