Yesterday I pickup up more items needed to get the bike back together. I’m still waiting for the cam and back ordered slingers. Since I’m busy this month the wait does not bother me. I hope to have all parts and prep work done by the end of this month. I want to get the bike back on the road before the end of July.
Oil gear check: < 0.25 mm
Oil gear check: < 0.05 mm
Today I checked the replacement oil gears. Translating the measurements from the Barrington book to metric I get an allowable backlash range of 0.10 mm to 0.25 mm. Mine measures as something less than 0.25 mm. The allowed clearance is 0.01 mm to 0.04 mm. My 0.05 mm feeler wouldn’t fit (good) and I had to scrounge around the garage to find something smaller.
Ahh… 0.0015 inch is under 0.04 mm and it fits just right. I’m going to call the oil pump gears good.
Lifters
The replacement lifters polished up just fine. Those are
dust specs on the bottom lifter in the picture, not pits.
Cylinder head and valve repair
Ready to install
The cylinder heads came back ready to install. One of the spark plug inserts was just starting to back out. It was removed, the head welded, then drilled and tapped. I took them out of the plastic bags they were in to take a closer and to snap these images. They look quite nice. Back in the plastic they went. Now I need to make the pistons and cylinders look as good.

Dirty and clean
Another angle
Both clean
Left and Right
I took a wire brush to the pistons. The L & R markings are needed now that I don’t have carbon buildup patterns to remind me which piston came from where.
Ready for bead blasting
The cylinders were cleaned with kerosene and masked. I’ll bead blast them this weekend so they will be ready for new paint.

Masking for paint
Clean and dry
I bead blasted the rust (but not all the paint) off of the cylinders a week and a half ago. Today I washed them and blew them dry then wiped the bores down with an oily rag. In the time I did that the external body had already started to flash rust! I brushed all external surfaces with acetone as part of the paint prep. Finally the cylider ends were masked.
Paint in progress
This stuff
I’m using a satin black because I like it against the white frame. Yeah, they were more of a gloss from the factory. I don’t care! Over the period of two hours I probably applied 8 very thin coats, 10-15 minutes apart.
Drying
No drips noticed. The cylinders are drying in a box in the garage. Tomorrow I’ll see if there are any spots I missed. I’ve plenty of paint left if more coats are necessary.
My cam is ready. I’ll pick it up next week along with the new slingers I ordered. It’s time to get the R69S back on the road.
