Updated phone mount

Wednesday, 9 Aug 2023

Shortly after getting the 790 in 2019 I 3D printed a GPS mount that would accept a RAM ball so I could attach a GPS or a phone running mapping software. link

Even with a short RAM arm the phone stuck way out. Within a month I’d replaced the ball with a socket. link

In Jan 2021 I replaced the RAM X-grip mount with a Quad Lock mount plus damper. The damper adds depth which again causes the phone to stick out much further than the instrument panel. link

Replacing the Quad Lock locking lever with a wireless charger made it even worse. Time to do something about that. The idea came from this posting on advrider.com.

I tried modifying the mount I’d originally used but was not happy with the result. I gave up and instead used Fusion 360 to modeled a mount from scratch. It took 3 test prints to get everything aligned.

The Quad Lock knuckle I ordered arrived in the mail, today.

I separated the two parts and installed the base. The supplied mounting screw has thread locker applied. The pivot screw also has thread locker. Vibration shouldn’t be an issue.

I installed the damper and charger and routed the power wire to the charger so it is out of the way. The last step was to click my phone into the mount and adjust the position to my liking before tightening the pivot screw.

Much better. A Prusa Slicer 3mf file containing the STL along with my print settings and modifiers to use solid infill around the holes for the inserts is here. Careful installing inserts. I did not add counter bores to help get them centered and recessed. Lazy.
